Haiku On Check/ Overdue/ Plain/ Bask

Check

You're really OK?
Just thought I had better check
You seem a bit down

The morning after
Was that all to your liking?
Just wanted to check

Medical check up
Every possible test
Nothing wrong at all

Overdue

Two words overdue
Eventually squeezed out
Reluctant 'Thank you'

Baby overdue
Eventually emerged
Slightly hairy face

Overdue for run
Too slothful or exhausted
Never quite sure which

Plain

Plain brown paper bag
Innocently under desk
Services rendered

Sky covered in cloud
Yet no rain on the parched plain
The gods are teasing

Plain and simple rings
Exchanged as a commitment
Deep pool of meaning

Bask

An old homeless man
Basking in reflected warmth
Wall Street office lights

An old basking shark
Second largest living fish
Hoovering plankton

You shine from within
Your kindness warmth to the world
I bask in shadow

Haiku on Blow/ Nobody/ Completely/ Winner

Blow

Blow your nose my dear
Maybe stop sniffing cocaine
It upsets membranes

Big blow for daddy
Now wipe your nose for mummy
Put tissue in bin

Blow this balloon up
Don't just make farty noises
And do stop laughing

Nobody

The lift doors closing
Nobody said anything
Same every day

She looked exhausted
Worn out by the day's efforts
Nobody at home

Where does wind come from
Where it goes nobody knows
Perhaps my kite does

Smile

Smile; the world smiles back
Speak softly; people listen
Be kind; they will learn

Completely

Meditation done
Showered, dressed and breakfasted
Completely at ease

Completely at ease
Walking the forest trail, then
He stopped in his tracks

He stopped in his tracks
Felt he was completely lost
Then recalled the plan

Winner

In relay-tionships
Baton is passed back and forth
Then both are winners

Dodo's caucus race
Start where you like, run around
Each is a winner

A score card somewhere
Records times we lie or cheat
Winners are losers

Youth Suicide: Recognising the Signs

This was the first video in a workshop based training resource for general practitioners and community psychologists and mental health workers. In the mid 1990s, 'Keep Yourself Alive' trained over 8500 professionals across Australia in a total of 150 2-day workshops.
This video introduces the issue of suicidality in young people, reflects some of their views about the issue, and discusses risk and protective factors. There are 3 more videos in the package:
'Youth Suicide: What do I do now?"
'Youth Suicide: What do I do next?"
'After Suicide: Picking up the pieces"

You could use this video as a conversation starter in a small group of young people, or in a conference format.

Just be aware. You (or others) may find this video challenging, and it may even remind you of bad times in the past, and possibly trigger old solutions.
Watch the video with a friend, or a family member - someone who can support you if you become distressed.

Out of the Blues: A video about depression in young people

This video was first made in 1998, and reflected our experience in developing a special service for Depression for young people up to the age of 25. We called the service 'Out of the Blues', hence the title of the video. The service ran successfully at Flinders Medical Centre for a number of years and then morphed into a youth service with somewhat broader aims.

You could use this video as a conversation starter in a small group of young people, or in a conference format.
