This paper was one of the first to examine the Parental Bonding Instrument with young people. The study was cross-sectional but included 681 students from Year 10 in 4 high schools in South Australia. Questions on suicidality were derived from the Achenbach Youth Self Report.
Assignment by the adolescents of their parents to the 'affectionless overcontrol' quadrant on the PBI was related to a doubling of risk for suicidal thoughts, a 3-fold increased likelihood of deliberate self harm, and a 5-fold increase in the relative risk for depression.
